Athan’s Bakery, Brookline

We had arrived to lunch at The Fireplace a bit early so we walked over to Athan’s Bakery to see what it was about. It is a beautiful shop filled with tempting sweet treats! Everything from gelato and handmade chocolates to baklava! We decided that we had to come over after lunch for dessert. G and I decided to share the Jamaica. It is a dark chocolate sponge cake layered with sweetened, tart cherries and then covered with a dark chocolate ganache. It was exquisite! The dark chocolate was rich and a perfect complement to the tart cherries! We loved it! The café space is perfect for meeting friends and enjoying your sweet treats! We also brought home some various types of baklava which we have been enjoying for a couple of days. They too are wonderful! Not overly sweet (as some baklava can be) and filled with nuts and dates. Too be honest, we are already wondering when we will be in the neighborhood again to try more lovely pastries.

The Fireplace, Brookline

On Saturday we met some friends in Brookline for a late lunch. Since The Publick House was closed we went down the way to The Fireplace. The room is very pleasant with a fireplace on the right as you enter and a few tables and more seating on a second level up a couple of stairs. It was fairly quite, with only a few other tables occupied the entire time we were there. G and I shared the New England Smoked Haddock & Shrimp Chowder w/ NH Bacon. It was delicious! The chowder was rich and creamy but also delicate with the seafood. We also split The Fireplace Hamburger with Maple-Smoked Bacon. This was nicely prepared and served with tasty fries. Overall, it was a lovely meal and a great local grill however, I am not sure if I would make a trip specifically for it.
