Boston classic! For my graduation celebration dinner my parents treated me to us to dinner at Hamersley’s Bistro. I selected Hamersley’s since I had wanted to try it for quite some time. We were seated immediately after we arrived in the simple, cozy room just in front of the open kitchen.
While we perused the menu we decided to start with a bottle of wine. With the help of our waiter we selected the 2006 Sommers Reserve Pinot Noir from Cristom Winery in Willamette Valley. It was delicious! It was a nice fruit forward wine which was very well balanced and medium bodied. It was a perfect crowd pleaser!
We started with a few small tastes. The red pepper and goat cheese tartine provided a lovely contrast between the tart goat cheese and the sweet red peppers. The hot and spicy marinated olives were also a nice start and something to nosh on as we chatted.
My parents both had the vegetarian prix fixe menu which was flexible and they could select different appetizers. My father had the asparagus salad which was the special that night. He enjoyed the freshness of the roasted asparagus. My mother started with the grilled mushroom and garlic sandwich on country bread. It was a rich, earthy dish with a wide variety of mushrooms which were sautéed to perfection. The only complaint with this dish is that it was quite large with two thick pieces of country bread and too much for an appetizer portion.
For my entrée I had the Spicy Halibut and Clam Roast with Bacon Braised Greens, White Beans and Black Trumpet Mushrooms. It was very nice. The fish was cooked to perfection. The greens were delicious with the saltiness of the bacon and the woody mushrooms. G and my brother-in-law had the Roast Chicken with Garlic, Lemon and Parsley which is the specialty of the house. It was delicious! Wonderfully moist meat infused with the flavors of garlic and lemon. My sister had the Loin Lamb Chops with Mushroom Risotto and Garlicky Broccoli Rabe. The lamb was cooked just too order and the risotto was creamy and delicious! My parents both had the Oven-Baked Polenta with Dried Tomatoes, Red Onion, Gorgonzola and Walnuts. It was a lovely contrast of flavors and textures.
For dessert G and I shared the S’More Ice Cream Cake which was a fun variation on the traditional s’more. My parents shared the Chocolate Caramel Bombe with Pecan Praline which was delicious!
Overall, the food was delicious! I didn’t find that the flavors and combinations were particularly creative however, the straightforward flavors and dishes were perfectly executed. The service too was perfect and unpretentious. Hamersley’s Bistro is a great restaurant for a celebration and particularly for larger parties. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and our meals!
