Two-fer NRT

Our NRT gathering for September was at Gitlo’s Dim Sum Bakery in Allston. It turned out to be a small group so we decided to start with a beer and appetizer at Sunset Grill & Tap. The beer list at the Sunset is amazing! They have 112 beers on tap so there is definitely something for everyone! We also started with the Spinach and Artichoke Dip which was served with pita chips. The chips were topped with melted pepper jack cheese, tomatoes, scallions, and olives and had a scoop of spinach artichoke dip in the center. It was a bit of an odd cross between nachos and dip. While it was nothing gourmet or fancy it was a perfect accompaniment to a glass of beer! The Sunset Grill is a great place to meet up with friends and relax!

After a drink we headed over to Gitlo’s Dim Sum Bakery. This is a bare bones room with a few tables and chairs. The menu is extensive and includes several dim sum items not typically seen in Chinatown. Though there were only three of us, we were giddy when we saw the menu and ordered several items including the Taro Shiu-Mai, Cantonese Dumplings, Special Shrimp Dumplings, Vegetable Bun, Lau Sa Boa (custard cream bun), Rainbow Clear Noodles, and the Curry Spare Ribs on Rice. The Cantonese Dumplings were filled with chive, water chestnuts, ginger, shrimp, and pork and were pan fried. The filling was generous and the wrapping delicate and perfectly cooked! Very tasty! The Special Shrimp Dumplings were filled with pea pod stems, shrimp and finished with fish roe on top. I was impressed with how much filling was inside. There were 4 full, albeit small, shrimp in each one. This was a lovely combination with the pea pod stems. The curry preparation on the Curry Spare Ribs was very turmeric-y but very tasty and the meat was nice and tender. The custard steam buns were tasty but the custard itself was a bit grainy as though the sugar was not properly melted. Overall most of the items we tasted were very good! We were surprised by the size of the dumplings; they were much larger and more generous then those typically offered in Chinatown dim sum restaurants. The prices are also very reasonable. We managed all of those dishes for just under $30. Two great finds!
