Breakfast for dinner?

This past Friday night G and I stopped by one of our local favorites, Gargoyles on the Square in Davis Square, Somerville. We enjoy sitting at the bar here, having a drink and sharing a few appetizers. It is particularly nice since it is in walking distance! On this visit we tried two appetizer specials and one dish from the bar menu. The first appetizer was a tempura soft shell crab served with a red pepper sauce and tomato salad. This was perfectly executed. The batter on the crab was delicate yet crispy and red pepper sauce was spicy and tangy. The second appetizer we had was a seared Wagyu beef which was served with a scallion pancake and chili dipping sauce. The beef was seared with a nice crust and thinly sliced. The marbling on the beef allowed it to melt in your mouth! Another great dish!

The most interesting dish of the evening was the Chicken & Waffles from the Bar Menu. When we asked our waiter about this dish he described it as, “Breakfast for dinner, but for grownups.” I was not too intrigued but G wanted to try it so we did. It was fried chicken thighs served over a half moon of waffles with a horseradish, pink peppercorn and honey butter syrup. G enjoyed it right away. I, on the other hand, took awhile to warm up to the combination of flavors. The fried chicken was ideally salty and crispy, as it should be. But, I found that flavor to contradict with the sweetness of the waffles. I also felt that the horseradish and the peppercorns were almost overpowering the other flavors of the chicken and waffles. While I didn’t dislike the dish, I didn’t love it either. As the picture attests to, I did finish my half of the dish but with each bite I was analyzing whether I thought the flavors worked together. This was a new dish (since we have last been) to the menu and it made me realize how I enjoy the creative dishes that are being put together by Chef Jason Santos right here in my neighborhood. While I don’t have to love everything, I appreciate being challenged!

  1. Yes, I know… I will learn to be better about taking pictures! I just didn’t think I would want to blog about this until it was too late!
